A multilayer PCB consists of three or more conductive layers (copper foil layers), which are pressed together to form a multilayer PCB. The copper foil layers are bonded together by PP (prepreg), and the multilayer PCB is one of the most complicated types in printed circuit boards. The PCB manufacturing process is complex, the yield is low, and rework is difficult, making the price relatively high.

Due to the increase in packaging density in integrated circuits, the interconnection is highly concentrated, so the use of multilayer PCBs becomes necessary. In the layout of printed circuit boards, sometimes unforeseen design problems, such as noise, stray capacitance, crosstalk, etc., therefore, when designing printed circuit boards, we must strive to keep the length of signal lines as short as possible. Obviously, due to the limited number of crossover circuits, it is difficult to obtain a satisfactory solution from a single-sided PCB or even a double-sided PCB. In the demand for large-scale interconnection and fingers, if the printed circuit board is to obtain satisfactory performance, it must be expanded to more than two layers, resulting in the emergence of multilayer PCBs.

The multilayer PCB has at least three conductive layers, two layers on the surface side, and the remaining layers are synthesized inside the insulating part. The electrical connection between each layer is usually achieved by plated through holes. Unless other stated, multilayer PCBs and double-sided PCBs are plated with through-hole printed circuit boards.
