It gives the jewler a style number to stick with if you ever need repairs, for the file, and a refrence number if anybody else wants that design or if your ring is lost. Its on the inside so noone will see. Actually most good jewlers inscribe all of their rings and diamonds it is just really small so you can not see it unless you use magnification.
