He then got up and knealt if front of me before GOd and everyone else and asked me to marry him. the second time he had finally gotten the ring I had picked out the day he first proposed and could not contain his excitment. We were sneaking around stealing time where we could because my aunt whom I was living with at the time didn't like him because he wasn't making a six figure paycheck.</p><p>We met after work in a target parking lot and he asked me again in his car with the rong in hand. Most chain stores will overcharge you for a lesser quality stone ecause most eole are linded y carat size rather than the overall quality of the diamond (Kay is one of the worst offenders). You can definitely tell the difference etween quality. My .75 carat ring when in need of a cleaning out-sarkles my friend's 2 carat monster of a ring every time ecause my ring is much etter quality. That said, the average size of an engagement ring in the USA is etween .5 - 1.00 carats. That includes 3 stone rings and other multile stone rings.</p><p></p><p>Some people do get smaller and some people do get larger. To directly answer your question, .5 carats is in the low end of the average size range. I would say the most important concern should be the quality. The most important of the 4C's is CUT, which is not to be confused with shape (which is round, princess, marquis, emerald, etc). Cut determines the sparkle of a ring. Cut should be ideal if the stone is round.</p><p>If you choose another shaped stone, cut should be very good because ideal doesn't typically exist in shapes other than round. Get the BEST possible cut. Next C you should consider is clarity. Personally, I wouldn't look at a ring whose clarity is below SI1. From SI range, you go up to VS range, then VVS range, then IF and F, which stands for flawless. I-range clarity is the worst. Next C you should consider is color. This is the easiest to understand because the rating scale is alphabetical. D is considered the perfect colorless diamond, which is ideal. Realistically, anything H or above is fantastic.</p><p>Don't get gypped by a slick salesperson at a chain store and purchase a poor quality diamond. I also think this is too big and too important to be done online and you'll want to see this ring in person before buying because of its importance. I would suggest going to a local mom & pop style jewelry shop. If you go to a small local shop, you can work specifically with the owner of the shop, who will work with you to get the best diamond you can afford. I looked at all types of rings, as my husband had asked me to figure out what I wanted.</p><p>There was a .4 carat G/VS2 round diamond ring I liked at Tiffany & Co. It cost over $8,000. I didn't get that ring. I ended up with a gorgeous .75 carat best possible cut F/VS1 heart shaped solitaire from a small local jewelry shop. It was not only larger and slightly better quality than the ring I saw at Tiffany & Co (you really are just paying for the brand name), but it cost less than half as much. Then when we got out weddings bands at the same place, they gave us my husband's ring for free! Shop local!</P><P>The real bottom line is that it should be about your love, not about a ring. For a full-time, minimum wage earner (i.e. the cheapest) that comes to $7482.00</P><P>But consider this, diamonds are controlled by the De Beers cartel. Here's a quote: De Beers chairman Nicky Oppenheimer said it best: "diamonds are intrinsically worthless, except for the deep psychological need they fill." (Link 1, section 5)</P><P>Now scroll down to part 9, "Diamonds are Actually Lousy Investments." The summary of that section is that diamonds go DOWN in value very quickly. As in, from the day you purchase it.</P><P>There is no scarcity of diamonds. There is a scarcity of the amount of diamonds that the cartel *releases* to the public every year.</P><P>I would consult your fiance as to the type of engagement ring she wants. I don't know how financially well off you are, but taking on thousands of dollars in debt at the beginning of a marriage is a big decision. I have a diamond ring I never wear. I have many alternative stone rings I do wear that all look like engagement rings. I'm always getting complimented on them. I little too much in that they *bling* so much I get scared a thief will think they are real. They are good stones equal in value to a diamond. I'd get a loose stone (princess or radiant cut has the most sparkle) & mount it in titanium.</P><P>See link 4 for a $445 stone that's 1.17 carats</P><P>Link 5 has titanium ring mounts. Why titanium? B/c it's strength will last a long time & handle more accidental situations than soft gold. I'd much rather design a ring with my husband to be. And start my marriage without the pressures of debt. You can always drip her in diamonds pendants & earrings as they go on sale later in life.
