The hair diffuser became a popular hair dryer attachment in the early 1970s for women with long curly hair. Sold as a separate attachment or complete with hairdryers they quickly became a must-have item for providing volume and large curls which were very popular at the time. Diffusers attach to a hairdryer to make lightweight curls, they make it easier to manage natural curls by distributing the hot air evenly around the scalp, whilst also creating body and volume and at the same time taming frizz.

In hair salons today, the diffuser is not the popular attachment that it used to be but that can be explained with the ever-changing fashion styles that are now popular and also the addition of new hair products such as hair straighteners and curling tongs. Straighter hairstyles that are now fashionable have meant that the long curly hair look is no longer popular. This has resulted in the sales of hair diffusers declining and some salons have even stopped providing a hair diffuser as an option for styling.

It may be in the not so distant future that the hair diffuser makes a return as fashions tend to go round in a circle and once again hair salons may be producing long, curly hairstyles with lots of body and volume. This has been the case with another hair product such as the heated hair rollers. Again this product was first popular during the 1960s, yet is set to make a return to the salons as major manufacturers start to produce more up to date versions using more modern materials.

Although it looks as though the hair diffuser may have seen sales decline, there is always a chance that it will make a return when fashion dictates. Manufacturers are constantly looking at fashions to determine which products will be more marketable depending upon the hairstyles that are popular today.
